Carer Visa Onshore Subclass 836

The Carer Visa (Subclass 836) is a permanent visa for people who are already in Australia and want to stay permanently to care for a relative with a long-term medical condition and who cannot receive adequate care from other services in Australia. 

What you can do with this visa

• Live in Australia indefinitely as a permanent resident. 
• Work and study without restriction. 
• Access Australia’s public health system (Medicare). 
• Travel to and from Australia freely for up to five years from grant. 

Eligibility

• You must be in Australia when applying and when the visa is granted.
• You need to be able and willing to provide long-term care for a relative with a serious medical condition.
• The person you’ll care for must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen living in Australia.
• The sponsor must show they can’t get suitable care elsewhere.
• You and any family members must meet health and character requirements, have no debts to the government, and hold a valid visa when applying.

2. Gather all the required information and documents. 
3. Submit your application while you are in Australia with a valid visa. 
4. Pay the application fee and await the decision (there may be a waiting queue due to cap/places).
