As per the latest data released by ABS, the Indian population in Australia has grown significantly in the last couple of years.

As of June 2018, there were 592,000 Indians calling Australia home. This was a 30% increase as compared to the census figures of 2016. In 2016, there were 455,389 Indians in Australia.

Indians have now overtaken New Zealand to be placed in the 3rd spot. There are 568,000 New Zealanders in Australia putting New Zealand in the 4th spot.

Indians now make up for 2.4% of the Australian population. The data from ABS also reveals that the median age of Indian migrants is around 34 years.

India has been the largest source country for migrants for Australia since 2016.

There were 162,417 Permanent Residence Visas granted in 2017-18 by Australia. 33,310 out of these were granted to Indians.

In 2016-17, 38,854 out of 183,608 PR visas were granted to Indians.

2018 also saw a record high for the number of Indian students studying in Australia. As of November 2017, there were 70,000 Indian students in Australia, as quoted by SBS News.

It was also revealed in the 2016 Census that along with the Indian population, Indian languages also had grown in Australia.

Hindi topped the list with 159,652 speakers while Punjabi followed second with 132,496 speakers.

The other languages that saw significant growth were Tamil with 73,161 speakers and Bengali with 54,566 speakers. Malayalam followed with 53,206 speakers and there were 52,888 Gujarati speakers. There were 34,435 Telegu speakers and 13,055 Marathi speakers. Kannada also saw a jump with 9701 speakers.

Other notable Indian languages in Australia are Konkani (2,416 speakers), Kashmiri (215), Oriya (721) and Sindhi (1,592).
