International Students in Australia: New Work Restrictions & Post-Study Opportunities Unveiled
Starting July 1, international students studying in Australia will face revised work restrictions, limiting them to 48 working hours per fortnight. The Australian government has announced this measure as part of their commitment to address migrant worker exploitation and ensure fair treatment for international students. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, work restrictions were relaxed, but this temporary measure came to an end in June of the current year.
International students studying certain degrees in Australia received positive news, as the government earlier announced an extension of post-study rights. From July 1, 2023, eligible students can enjoy an additional two years of post-study work opportunities after completing their courses. This move is expected to provide students with greater career prospects and practical exposure in their respective fields.
The new work restrictions apply to most international students, except for those who were already working in the aged sector by May 9, 2023. Student visa holders can work without restrictions when their course of study or training is not in session.
Furthermore, an agreement between India and Australia on migration and mobility has introduced the Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme (MATES) for Indian students. This initiative allows Indian students who have completed their studies at Australian universities to seek employment in Australia for up to eight years. Additionally, the MATES program aims to facilitate the exchange of students, academic researchers, and business professionals between the two countries, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing.
To be eligible for the MATES visa program, candidates must meet specific criteria, including being below the age of 31, having graduated from an accredited university, and being in the early stages of their professional careers. Fields of study such as engineering, mining, financial technology, artificial intelligence, information & communication technology, agricultural technology, and renewable energy are eligible for the program.
As a reminder, students who violate their visa conditions by canceling their enrolment, failing to attend classes, or not making satisfactory progress during their studies may face consequences and jeopardize their stay in Australia.
With these recent changes, Australia seeks to strike a balance between offering international students valuable opportunities for education and professional growth, while also safeguarding the interests of its labor market and ensuring fair treatment for all workers.
