Request to Defer Your Studies

Request to Defer Your Studies

Not ready to start your studies just yet? Don’t worry—deferring your course might be the right choice for you!

If you’ve received an offer from an Australian Institute but feel now isn’t the right time to begin your studies, Bansal Immigration is here to guide you through the deferral process.

What is Course Deferral?

Depending on your course and education provider, you may have the option to defer your offer for up to one year. This means your institution will hold your place so you can start your studies in the next semester or academic year.

  • Deferrals are typically available for both coursework and research students.
  • Both domestic and international students can request a deferral.
  • International students must adhere to the National Code of Practice for Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students (National Code 2018) when deferring their studies.

Why Do Students Consider Deferring Their Studies?

Students may choose to defer for a variety of personal, academic, or financial reasons:

  • Travel, Work, or Volunteering Abroad: Gain valuable life experiences and broaden your perspective before diving into academic commitments.
  • Personal Development: A gap year can boost self-confidence and contribute significantly to personal growth.
  • Improve Academic Readiness: Research from the Sydney School of Education and Social Work shows students who took a gap year often perform better academically.
  • Financial Preparation: Many students defer to build financial savings, ensuring they can focus on studies without financial stress.

Cost of Deferral

  • Some education providers may charge a deferral fee ranging from AUD 100–AUD 200.
  • Fees may vary by institution and may or may not be refundable.

  3. For Long-term Deferrals (Beyond One Year):
    • If you wish to defer longer than one year, you’ll need to reapply to your institution.
  4. For International Students:
    • If you've paid your tuition fees but haven’t applied for your student visa, you can still defer.
